Why Not Start With a Mini Triathlon?


Training for a tri can seem overwhelming to multisports athletes who are just beginning or who aren't quite physically ready for multisports racing.  The idea of swimming, biking and running for a single race can intimidate  anyone from triathlon, making them believe that they shouldn't even attempt it  since they believe they might not make the distance for just one of the disciplines, nevermind three!.  If this sounds like you, why not try for a mini triathlon?  These small but challenging competitions are springing up all over the country  and are proving to be a lot of fun for every aspiring multisporter.

Some mini races feature varying distances for each of the three legs of the sport.  Some are separated into different age group categories, such as a mini triathlon for kids and one for seniors, but most are open to virtually anyone that cares to join.  Some start as small as a 250 yard swim in a pool, a 4 mile bike ride and finally a 1.5 mile run, and others are slightly longer and have a quarter mile swim, twelve mile bike ride, and 3 mile run. .

Why attempt a mini triathlon?  Many athletes would agree that training for and finishing a triathlon is one of their most memorable accomplishments as well as most enjoyable.  Wherever you end up on the event results list, you’ll likely get the bug and want to try another event.  With every finish comes the natural urge to push a little bit harder to get a little bit faster.  There's just something about competing against yourself, your own time, your own performance, that really motivates a person!  But for many, a full Olympic or Half-Ironman tri might prove to be too much of a challenge so you have to be realistic and safe, so aiming for a mini triathlon is a much better and safer option.  If you set your goals too high, the likelihood of throwing in the towel half way along your triathlon journey is much higher, whereas having a goal that's realistic will keep you focussed on crossing that finish line.
